Why is Sunflower Seed Oil used in my product?Updated 17 days ago
The short answer is that we actually don't use Sunflower Seed Oil directly in any of our products. You can find Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil (Sunflower Oil) listed as an ingredient on some of the international versions of our products due to requirements for how our tocopherols are listed on our labels.
For a bit more context, as our products are now available in various parts of the world, our labels can vary between countries, due to local regulatory requirements or market-specific preferences. While the ingredients are the same, they can be listed in INCI (International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient) deck format.
The most common example of this is how our tocopherols are listed. In countries and regions subject to European Cosmetic Regulation (EC) N°1223/20091, the on-label list of ingredients for our products will include Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil (Sunflower Oil). According to Article 19 1(g) of the Regulation, the list of ingredients required on the container and packaging of cosmetic products must include subsidiary technical materials that are present in the final product. Our tocopherols are derived from the unsaponifiable fractions of sunflower seed oil – meaning that the sunflower seed oil fractions are unaltered during the saponification (soap-making) process. The sunflower oil that remains is classified as a sub-ingredient of the finished cosmetic product and, therefore, is listed on many international labels in compliance with the European Cosmetic Regulation referenced above.
