Why did you remove “hemp” from the name?Updated 23 days ago

Dr. Bronner’s has engaged in over twenty years of hemp activism for hemp oil to be grown and produced by U.S. farmers. In 1998, David Bronner added hemp oil to his grandfather’s soap formula—hemp oil has excellent moisturizing and lathering properties that make it ideal for soaps.

The addition of hemp oil soon brought Dr. Bronner’s into conflict with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), which sought to ban all hemp products from market shelves. Along with Vote Hemp, Dr. Bronner’s successfully sued the DEA and helped pave the way for a thriving hemp food and body care industry.

Even though hemp products could now be sold, hemp agriculture continued to be illegal in the U.S., and all of the hemp for our soaps had to be imported from Canada. Dr. Bronner’s worked hard to bring this issue to the attention of legislators and consumers.

In 2019, hemp was finally removed from the Controlled Substance Act, and we are now able to source U.S.-grown hemp oil. Having achieved our goal to legalize hemp in the U.S., we updated our product name to "18-in-1 Pure-Castile Magic Soap" and made the scent easier to see and find for customers. Hemp oil continues to be an ingredient and can be found on our ingredient deck.
