Palm oil is obtained from the fruits of the palm. When saponified, palm oil gives bar soaps hardness and stability while maintaining a smooth and emollient lather.
Our organic palm oil is refined, bleached, and deodorized - almost exclusively at our headquarters in Vista, CA. From there it is quickly used in the manufacturing of our bar soap. Rest assured that refined oils, such as out organic palm oil, have a 1-year shelf life. To ensure this, we store it away from light in nitrogen-blanketed tanks and our Quality Team evaluates our ingredients before and after refining as well as before use in soap-making.
Additionally, palm oil, having been saponified, does not carry the same rancidity potential in bar soap form. Once manufactured, our bar soaps have a shelf life of 3 years.
Palm oil has special qualities that make it ideal for use in our Bar Soaps: when saponified, it gives our Bar Soaps hardness and stability while maintaining a smooth and emollient lather, qualities that we have simply been unable to match using other oils. We do not choose to use palm oil because it is cheaper or more abundant; on the contrary, we have gone to great lengths to create our own fair trade and organic palm oil project, one that ensures that our palm oil is sustainably harvested and causes no harm to the environment.
All our palm oil comes from smallholder farms in Ghana, where oil palms have been grown for centuries, and where no new deforestation is occurring. We are constantly striving to improve sustainability, and we support growers with organic methods for improving palm fruit yields—thus getting more oil out of the same amount of land. In short, we believe that it’s not simply what you grow, but how you grow it.
