Is this discoloration on the bottom of my Coconut Oil jar normal?Updated a year ago
The yellow/brown deposit sometimes found in the bottom of the Virgin Coconut Oil jar is normal (though isn’t always present). It’s caused by very fine particles of sediment that are created during the expelling process and are small enough to pass through the filter.
Any virgin coconut oil made using a dry process, including Dr. Bronner’s, has visible sediment in the oil as it emerges from the expeller press. That sediment is usually filtered out in a multistage filtration process. Since we air-dry the coconut flesh at temperatures around 425°F (220°C), some caramelization occurs during the drying and makes the sediment slightly brownish. When you taste it you’ll notice a slight caramel flavor. In the past, there’s occasionally been slippage of the very fine sediment through the filtration system. That’s what you see at the bottom of the jar. We have done extensive studies on visible sediment to ensure that it does not promote biological growth or affect the safety and quality of the Coconut Oil.
