Is the Pure-Castile Soap safe for dog and cat washing?Updated 10 months ago
While we don’t have a specialty line of products for pets, our soaps do work well for washing dogs and cats, with the exception of Tea Tree which is not safe for pet washing.
For washing cats, we recommend only using our Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Liquid Soap as cats can have a negative reaction to certain essential oils*. Although essential oils make up only a small percentage of our soaps, it is best to be safe and not expose your cat to essential oils unnecessarily.
For pups, we suggest trying out our Peppermint-scented soaps as peppermint oil can be used as a tool in deterring pests, however, if you are uncomfortable using a product with essential oils on your pet, consider our Baby Unscented Castile Soap variety.
To wash your pet, first wet the fur well. Next, add enough soap to produce lather and massage it into the fur, all the way to the skin. The amount depends on the animal's size, as well as the length, thickness, and texture of its fur, but we suggest starting with about 1 tsp. and using more if needed. As with people, be sure to keep the soap out of their eyes. Finally, make sure to rinse all the soap out extra well as they could ingest unrinsed soap when they clean themselves, which might upset their stomach a little. For an in-depth walkthrough and video of this process, check out Lisa Bronner's blog post Dog Washing with Dr. Bronner’s Soap. We also invite you to check out our blog post, Pet Care with Dr. Bronner's, for further information about pet care with our soaps.
*A high concentration of some essential oils can be toxic to some animals (some are more sensitive than others). Although our soaps should not pose any threat to your pet when used according to our recommendations, we understand that health is especially important, so we encourage you to consult with your local veterinarian should you have any concerns.
